When it comes to pets, the best way to treat an illness is to prevent it from ever developing. That is why McGrath Veterinary Center advocates preventive care with all of our wellness services, starting with the comprehensive physical exam. We also recommend a series of vaccines (updated regularly) as well as special attention to diet and nutrition. For our puppy patients, we offer wellness packages for various breeds that include these vaccines. Ideally, pets of all ages should receive a wellness exam at least once a year, but for senior pets, more frequent veterinary visits are recommended.

During your pet’s wellness exam, we perform a thorough nose-to-tail assessment to look for specific conditions that could indicate an illness or other condition. We then document the results to create a wellness profile, which is used as a baseline for future visits. We also measure your pet’s Body Condition Score (BCS) to determine if there are any weight concerns. If necessary, we can discuss our maintenance and prescription diets as well as nutraceuticals that can help. In addition to the physical exam, your pet’s wellness visit includes a time of consultation, when we discuss his/her behavior and lifestyle. Please feel free to ask any questions or share your concerns at this time.

Pet vaccines are an important component of your pet’s overall health care and are typically administered during wellness visits. They are designed to protect against a number of potentially fatal diseases by exposing the body to an agent that resembles a certain disease-causing organism. Once the body is exposed to this agent, it builds up immunity against that specific disease. Then, if your pet is ever exposed to the real disease, his/her body will be prepared to fight it off. Some of the core vaccines that we recommend for dogs include parvovirus, rabies, and distemper. For cats, we recommend panleukopenia, rabies, and calicivirus. Vaccination schedules vary from pet to pet and are dependent on age, breed, and lifestyle.
